Stigwood was running an auction in the Rustwater Marshes, selling slaves to a large audience.
Once he was done with an old woman, he attempted to sell Hester to his "upper class" buyers. The crowd clamored for the young woman before a mysterious woman - Anna Fang - jacked up the price.
Stigwood then threatened Fang with giving him the money she offers or being arrested so Stigwood can have Shaw for himself. Fang then proceeded to shoot the auctioneer with her gun, inciting a fight between her and the buyers to allow Tom and Hester to escape.
